Munich to Memmingen
After flying into Munich, you’ll want to appreciate some of the incredible sights and highlights of this historic Bavarian city. After that, you’re on your way. Put your Mercedes G500 to the test and see what this luxury SUV is capable of on the autobahn from Munich to Memmingen. The 188km journey can easily be covered in 90 minutes, but you’ll definitely want to make the pleasure last longer than that!
Approximately half way, make a stop in the charming town of Landsberg am Lech. It is part of the Romantic Road, a former trade route that runs north-south between Wurzburg and Fussen, but that’s a trip for another visit.
Amble around the picturesque Old Town of Landsberg am Lech – today the beautiful weir on the River Lech and the colourful merchant houses make this a delightful place to find a traditional weinstube (wine bar or tavern) for a hearty lunch. Fischerwirt on Rossmarkt is a great choice serving German and European fine dining alfresco on the cobbled square. Walk off the Bayerischer Schweinebraten (Bavarian beer roasted pork) and indulgent pastry dessert with a stroll around the town’s colourful Bavarian Gate Clock Tower and the Mutterturm castle folly which offers wonderful river views. Incidentally, the castle was built just over a hundred years ago by an eccentric racing car driver!

Memmingen to Stuttgart
After breakfast, follow the scenic 312 to Ochsenhausen, famous for its abbey architecture and narrow gauge railway. The drive from Memmingen to Stuttgart is 180km but the scenic route demands a relaxed pace, so allow at least 2½ hours for the journey.
At Biberach, head north on the 465 and prepare yourself for the breathtaking scenery of the Upper Swabia. Follow the winding cliff-lined road beside the River Lauter as it meanders through the idyllic valley scenery. Driving these roads is a pleasure, thanks to the Mercedes G500’s responsive handling and comfortable drive position. Everywhere you look, the Grosse Lauter Valley is littered with romantic castle ruins, picturesque villages and baroque churches.
Places to See in Stuttgart
If you want to stretch your legs after the drive to Stuttgart, visit Wilhelma, Europe’s largest zoo and botanical gardens set in the grounds of a Moorish palace. Ascend the 216m-high Fernsehturm TV Tower for a bird’s eye view of the city and surrounding forests and vineyards from the observation deck.
Alternatively, stroll around the Weissenhof Estate, a showcase of modernist houses built by world-famous architects including Le Corbusier to wow delegates at the International Architecture Congress in 1927. Cultural visitors will love the gamut of museums in Stuttgart, including the City Museum for Modern Art, the Staatsgalerie and the Museum am Löwentor, which showcases fossils of dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals.
Wine lovers will appreciate that Stuttgart is surrounded by neat vineyards providing scenic drives, tours, wine tastings (for non-driving passengers, of course) and informal places to eat. Nearby Esslingen has a well-preserved medieval centre and is home to Kessler, Germany’s oldest sparkling wine producer.
The most scenic route will include the Swabian Alb, a challenging drive through snow-capped mountains with blue karst springs and dramatic waterfalls. Man made sites are equally appealing with turreted castles and palaces, decorative Baroque churches and pretty towns that provide plenty of excuses to stop for refreshments and a leg-stretch. Eventually the lush green valley scenery subtly gives way to rolling vineyards as you reach Esslingen and Uhlbach with its Museum of Viniculture in the outskirts of Stuttgart. Plan to spend time exploring some of the city’s many museums, shops and attractions before relinquishing your beautiful Mercedes G500 hire car and flying home.
